There’s no question that the people of India are huge cinephiles and TV lovers. After all, Bollywood is the world’s largest film industry in movie production. But the television experience has witnessed plenty of change in recent years with the emergence of OTT services.
There’s a wealth of streaming channels in India, with over 25 services available for users. They include local ones like Hotstar, SonyLiv, and Voot; and international platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.
Hotstar dominates the market in the country, with over 300 million subscribers. But other services also have a considerable market share, including Voot. This channel is home to more than 60,000 hours of video content from channels like MTV, Nickelodeon, Colors, and Zee5.
And the greatest thing is that you can watch all these popular channels for free. On the downside, however, once you step outside India, the channel becomes off-limits. Copyright issues have rendered Voot available to Indian viewers only, a huge disappointment if you’re an expat.
Therefore, you must memorize those three words by heart: virtual private network, or VPN for short. This tool will give you access to the streaming channel no matter where you are.

What Is Voot?
Voot is an Indian video-on-demand (VOD) service similar to Netflix and Prime Video. It is a product of Viacom 18, a joint venture between Viacom and TV18. The company launched it in 2016 as a free ad-led streaming platform for cord-cutters in the country.
Today, Voot has over 50 million monthly active users, making the second-largest player in the premium ad-led VOD market. But despite reaching these staggering figures in such a short time, the service is still a long way from its biggest competitor, Hotstar.
The latter has more than 150 million active users per month, and has a broader selection of shows, especially on the international front.
A large part of Voot’s success over the past three years has been due to drama and reality TV shows. Viacom 18 produces several programs of such genre, which include hits like Bigg Boss and Balika Vadhu.
However, Viacom 18 plans to increase the number of monthly users to 100 million, according to company CEO and MD Sudhanshu Vats. To do that, Voot will expand its library to cover more content and introduce an ad-free but paid version.
Furthermore, the platform wants to branch out beyond India. It already signed a partnership with Virgin TV in the UK earlier this year and plans to launch in the US by the end of 2019.
Where Is Voot Available?
Voot has a various lineup of content, ranging from drama and reality TV to news and music. It even produces original programs in several languages that cover many genres like talk shows, dramas, and thrillers.
The problem is that all these channels and shows are only accessible inside India. Even in the UK, you must have a Virgin TV subscription to access Voot. Due to copyright issues and licensing agreements, the streaming service is geo-blocked outside the country.
How Can Voot Determine My Location?
A more popular method is your IP address. which gives away your online identity and location. It won’t reveal your exact position, like street or building, but rather your city or area. And that’s enough for Voot to find out that you are not inside its coverage area.
Therefore, you need a tool that can conceal your IP address and prevent the streaming service from pinpointing your location.
Can I Prevent Location Tracking?
The most effective way to stop Voot from tracking your location is by subscribing to a premium VPN service. Short for virtual private network, this program makes you appear as if you were someplace else. How?
VPNs redirect your Internet connection through one of their secure servers. They also enwrap your traffic with an encrypted tunnel to prevent third parties from monitoring it. Their vast server network allows you to connect to any server of your choice and bypass all sorts of online restrictions.
To sum it up, if you want to watch Voot from the US, Canada, Germany, Spain, Australia, and every other nation, you have to get a VPN, then connect to an Indian server. Your traffic will go through that server, tricking the service that you are inside India.
And the best part is that no one can track your Internet activity or monitor your data because elite VPNs offer military-grade encryption.
Is a VPN Installation Easy?
Virtual private networks have dedicated apps for the majority of platforms, including Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android. That makes the installation process very easy, fast, and just a few clicks away.
- Choose a top VPN brand, visit its website, and click register, sign up, or create an account.
- Download the VPN app from Google Play Store or Apple’s App Store. You can also do it directly from your VPN’s website. The app will automatically install.
- Now, launch the app, sign in to your new account, and connect to any server located in India.
- Notice that the location error message that appeared on your screen before is now gone.
- Therefore, you’re free to stream your favorite Voot shows from anywhere in the world.
Which VPN Can Unblock Voot From Abroad?
There are plenty of VPN brands that can give you access to Voot from outside India. However, not all of them offer the same quality of services. Paid providers, for example, ensure you get the best level of protection, privacy, as well as total Internet access.
Free VPNs, on the other hand, are not as efficient. They offer a limited number of servers with medium to low speeds. Some don’t even use any kind of encryption, putting your privacy and security at risk. Moreover, some of them contain malware that steals to steal your data and track your activities.
And since these services have to make money somehow, they will collect records of your online activity and sensitive data to sell it to third parties. Advertising companies could really benefit from such data to deliver targeted or customized ads.
As a result, you must always sign up for an elite VPN, even if it will cost you a few bucks.
The best VPN that money can buy is ExpressVPN. Whether you’re looking to avoid online restrictions or protect your privacy, this VPN is your answer.
With a network of 3,000+ servers across 160 locations in 94 countries, you can watch Voot from any corner of the world. The company has three servers located in India, which means you can unlock every Indian-restricted website.
But limitless Internet access means nothing if you don’t have excellent speed rates. After all, who wants to experience buffering issues when you’re watching your favorite shows? Well, you don’t have to worry about that at all because ExpressVPN has speedy servers.
Even if you connect to a distant server, you won’t even notice the slight speed drop to your Internet connection. However, it’s preferable that you select a nearby location to ensure maximum speeds.
That brings me to my next point: military-grade encryption. ExpressVPN uses the strongest protocol in the business: Advanced Encryption Standard with 256-bit keys. Better known as AES 256-bit across Internet users, this encryption provides 115,792,089,237,316,195,423,570,985,008,687,907,853,269,984,665,640,560,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 possible combinations.
In other words, it’s basically uncrackable.
ExpressVPN follows a strict zero-logs policy as well, meaning it won’t keep logs of sensitive info or track your online activity. It only collects “the minimal data required to operate a world-class VPN service at scale.” And it won’t share such information with any third parties.
And these are all basic stuff, to be honest. Here’s a look at some of the other benefits you’ll enjoy:
- Military-grade encryption.
- Zero-logs policy.
- High levels of speed.
- Smart DNS proxy called MediaStreamer.
- Compatible apps with iOS, Android, Mac, Windows, Kindle Fire, and Linux.
- Vast server network.
- Support for Voot, Netflix, and every major streaming service.
- DNS leak protection and a kill switch.
- 24/7 customer support with live chat feature.
- Torrent and P2P allowance.
- 30-day refund policy guarantee.
- Five simultaneous device connections.
- A bit expensive compared to other services ($12.95/month).
Voot and BulletVPN have one thing in common; they are both relatively new services. But that doesn’t mean the VPN isn’t reliable or trustworthy. Despite its young age, it offers some top-quality features, including the ever-so-important AES 256-bit military-grade encryption.
BulletVPN also has total respect for your privacy, protecting it with a zero-logs policy. So don’t worry about your online data and activity because this provider will keep them safe.
Users will also enjoy fast speed rates, a must-have feature for any VPN that supports torrenting and streaming channels like Netflix or Voot. You can watch your favorite programs without the interruption of video buffering.
Moreover, the company will protect your data by disconnecting you from the Internet in case of a malfunction. Thanks to its kill switch, you don’t have to worry about any leaks. And if you activate the BulletShield as well, you’ll only be able to access the Internet if you’re connected to a BulletVPN server.
The main issue with BulletVPN is the limited server network it provides. It has 115+ servers in 51 countries, which is very low compared with the other elite names. Nonetheless, they are located in key areas around the globe (like India), covering every continent.
- AES-256 encryption.
- No-logs policy.
- Kill switch + BulletShield.
- Fast speeds.
- Unblocks streaming platforms.
- Allows torrenting and P2P.
- Free Smart DNS.
- 30-day refund policy.
- Six simultaneous device collections.
- round-the-clock customer support.
- Smaller server network.
If ExpressVPN doesn’t fit your budget and you want to get the next best thing, head over to NordVPN. Its monthly subscription is just one dollar cheaper ($11.95), but the yearly plans offer incredible discounts.
As for security, NordVPN has the standard security and privacy features that every elite brand provides. That includes the AES 256-bit encryption, no-logs policy, kill switch, and DNS leak protection. It even offers an Ad-blocker and a double VPN tool that encrypts everything twice.
The company operates over 5,000 servers in 59 countries and works with the majority of streaming services. It allows you to stream Voot, Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video, and more. The only problem is that some servers have low connection speeds. So you might experience some buffering issues.
Users will also benefit from a free Smart DNS service called SmartPlay. You can install it on devices that aren’t compatible with NordVPN apps like smart TVs, routers, and gaming consoles.
Other than that, this brand is more than decent.
- AES 256-bit encryption.
- No-logs policy.
- Double VPN.
- CyberSec (ad-blocker).
- Vast server network.
- Works with the majority of streaming channels.
- Ready-made apps for major operating systems.
- Smart DNS: SmartPlay.
- Six concurrent devices per account.
- Supports torrenting.
- Award-winning customer support.
- 30-day refund program.
- Some servers are a bit slow.
IPVanish is another VPN service you could use to unblock Voot. It is a well-known brand that guarantees total anonymity and security. It has a decent network of over 1,300 servers in 75 countries, which gives you access to plenty of geo-blocked websites.
However, several users complained that IPVanish could no longer access Netflix or BBC iPlayer due to the VPN ban. But that doesn’t apply to every server. Some can still give you a valid IP address to bypass restrictions.
Nonetheless, IPVanish can unblock Voot no matter where you are. It also makes sure that no one intercepts or reads your online activity with the AES 256-bit encryption. It also won’t keep records of what you do on the Internet.
The service is also optimized for Kodi devices, which makes it an ideal choice if you own one.
But keep in mind that this is the only VPN on my list with a headquarters inside Five Eyes jurisdiction. The US-based company must comply with the government’s data retention laws and provide user information upon request. But since IPVanish applies a no-logging policy, it will only submit minimal details.
- AES 256-bit encryption.
- Decent server network.
- Kodi optimization.
- Compatible with the majority of devices.
- Zero-logs policy.
- Top speeds.
- Kill switch and DNS leak protection.
- Ten simultaneous device connections.
- Short refund policy of only seven days.
- Based in the USA.
- Limited access to certain streaming channels.
Voot Future Plans
As I mentioned earlier, Voot plans to increase its active users to 100 million by the end of the year. Viacom 18’s CEO and MD Sudhanshu Vats revealed that to achieve their goal, Voot will introduce more than 30 Originals across genres and languages.
Vats also told the Economic Times that the average time spent on Voot had reached 100 billion minutes of watch time. He also added that the channel plans to provide three more offerings: Voot Kids, Voot International, and Voot Freemium.
“OTT watch time has been doing phenomenally well in our journey of three years and has grown at 8x.”Sudhanshu Vats, CEO and MD of Viacom 18
Akash Banerji, Business Head of Voot Advertising Video Platform, said that 85% of content consumption on the streaming channel comes from mobile devices. That is why Voot launched 11 interactivity features to increase audience engagement.
They include in-show quizzes, video voting, social sharing, styling your artist, and finding hidden treasures. Furthermore, Banerji added that Voot is looking to add interactive content as well, just like Netflix did with Black Mirror: Bandersnatch.
“I think we will have to continue to experiment, and there are already plans for doing something in that space.”Akash Banerji, Business Head of Voot Advertising Video Platform

Watch Voot Outside India – Final Words
Voot is an Indian streaming channel with rising popularity. It may lag behind Hotstar in terms of subscriptions or content, but the service is slowly gaining grounds thanks to quality programs, especially on the local front. Don’t forget, the platform just recently launched in 2016.
Voot is mostly famous for drama series, reality TV, and original content. However, there are plans to introduce more offerings in the future, including an ad-free paid version. Voot will also expand beyond India to become available in the UK, the US, and more.
But until then, you can’t access the service from outside in the country unless you have a VPN. And choose an elite provider that can ensure total online privacy, security, and freedom.
